Former Indian legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar reckons it shouldn’t be a surprise if Mumbai Indians go on to win the title once again. MI is the most successful IPL franchise in tournament history as they have won the title on five occasions.
Rohit Sharma has been leading the team from the front and he has done a fabulous job as a leader.
Mumbai had retained Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, and Jasprit Bumrah before the IPL 2022 mega auction. The five-time champions also broke the bank for Ishan Kishan as they roped him in for a whopping amount of INR 16 crores.
Furthermore, Mumbai has a potent bowling line-up as they have bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Jaydev Unadkat, and Tymal Mills.
Mumbai has all the experience under their belt to go all the way in the tournament and they will look to bring his best to the table.
Sunil Gavaskar said on Sports Tak, “Mumbai know what it takes to win the tournament. This helps them to turn around a lot of games that seem to have gotten away from their grasp. Yes, they do start slow in the IPL, but due to the number of teams this time, they will have time to make it up.”
The Little Master reckons MI can go all the way as they have Rohit Sharma as their batting leader whereas they have a gun fast bowler in Jasprit Bumrah.
Gavaskar added: “If you have a batting leader like Rohit Sharma and a bowling leader like Jasprit Bumrah, it shouldn’t be a surprise if they win the title again.”
On the other hand, the renowned commentator believes it will be difficult for Gujarat Titans to lift the trophy in their maiden season. The Titans have a decent bowling line-up but their batting could be their Achilles Heel.
“Gujarat Titans are a new team with a new captain and that’s why I feel they lack experience. I want to see how they perform in the first 5-6 games. If they do well then we can say they can win the title. But the kind of team that they have, I think it will be difficult for them to win the IPL in their first attempt.”
Gujarat Titans will begin their IPL campaign against Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 28th March.
