Despite Kane Williamson’s fantastic marathon innings that forced a Super Over, Sunrisers Hyderabad were unable to get away with a win. SRH faltered while chasing DC’s score of 159 after Bairstow’s dismissal. The New Zealand captain kept them in the hunt as the rest of the middle order completely folded under the pressure.
In the Super Over, the duo of Kane Williamson and David Warner failed to make it count and several fans and commentators questioned SRH’s decision on not sending Bairstow to the Super Over. After all, he had a strike rate of over 200 and was hitting the ball more cleanly than anyone.
However, David Warner’s short run in the Super Over proved to be extremely decisive in the larger scheme of things. On the final ball of the over bowled by Axar Patel, the SRH captain ran for a double. However, he ran the first one marginally short, and as a result, a run was deducted from SRH’s tally. They finished with 7 runs on board, which Delhi Capitals managed to chase on the final delivery of their Super Over.
Attending the post-match press conference, Shikhar Dhawan who was out in the Super Over with his captain, Rishabh Pant suggested that little details matter a lot. He was also extremely glad that David Warner ran one run short.
“Those little things (one short) make a huge impact, I am glad that David didn’t complete that run, we got the edge over that and we ended up winning the game,” he said. He was however, critical of the manner in which DC let the game go until the Super Over.
“It was a thrilling game and shouldn’t have gone to the Super Over. We should have won it easily, but we made few mistakes but that’s part of the journey. I feel that the two boundaries which Avesh got hit, we should have contained them. One off boundary was fine but, it’s part of the game.
“We were dominating the game whole time, shouldn’t have let it go that way in the end,” Dhawan added.
He also lauded Kane Williamson’s innings, who according to Dhawan, ‘always shows his class.’ Kane Williamson scored 66 not out from 51 deliveries.
“It was very tough to bat especially after the powerplay, it’s turning and holding. Especially in T20 cricket, batsmen have to hit big shots. Kane Williamson played a good knock, he’s a champion player and he always shows his class.
“It’s good to win the game in the end. We made it quite thrilling going to the Super Over and chasing it down,” the opening-batsman concluded.
