Delhi Capitals opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has admitted that he knew he had to increase his strike in the shortest format of the game. Dhawan was known for his sedate approach till 2017 but he has turned the tables in the last four seasons.
The left-hander scored his runs at a strike rate of 136.91 in the 2018 edition and had a strike rate of 135.91 in the 2019 season. Dhawan was at his best in the previous season as he was the second-highest run-getter with 618 runs and scored his runs at a strike rate of 144.73.
Dhawan has once again started the ongoing 2021 season on a high as he is striking at 163.15. Furthermore, the southpaw is currently the leading run-getter of the tournament with 186 runs in three matches.
The left-hander was at his destructive best against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Sunday as he scored a whirlwind knock of 92 runs from 49 balls with the help of 13 fours and two sixes. Dhawan scored his runs at a blistering strike rate of 187.76 and helped his team chase the total of 196 with ease as they won by six wickets.
In fact, Dhawan’s strike rate in the IPL till 2017 was a paltry strike rate of 122 but he has boosted it to 142 in the last four years. Thus, Dhawan has tremendously improved his scoring rate and he has been giving solid starts to DC while batting at the top of the order.
Shikhar Dhawan said in the post-match presentation, “It was a conscious effort from my side. I knew I have to improve on that (strike rate). Started taking more risks. Not afraid of changes, always open towards it. Not scared of getting out as well. Have worked on a few shots. My slog shot has improved a lot. It was there earlier as well, but now I play it more freely. I’m more relaxed, having played for so many years. Don’t take things for granted. Great opening with Prithvi. Happy with the way he played today and scored those 30-40 runs”.
Dhawan has been at his best in the last few years and he will look to continue the good show for Delhi Capitals. DC will next face Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 21st April.
