Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has revealed the four players that Delhi Capitals should retain before the mega auction of IPL 2022.
It has been reported that all the eight franchises could retain four players, in which two players can be Indian whereas two could be overseas. Furthermore, there could also be a combination of three Indian players and one foreign player.
Chopra has picked Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer as the two Indian players that the franchise should retain. Iyer is Delhi Capitals’ captain whereas Pant had led the team in the absence of Iyer in the first phase of IPL 2021.
Both of these have been consistent performers for the Capitals and they have delivered the goods for the team with the bat.
Chopra added that there will be a toss-up between Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw for the third Indian player. Both of these players have provided good starts to the franchise.
Dhawan had scored 618 runs in IPL 2020 whereas Shaw scored 308 runs in seven matches of IPL 2021. Dhawan was the Orange Cap holder before IPL 2021 was indefinitely postponed as the southpaw had scored 380 runs in eight matches.
Chopra said while talking on his YouTube Channel, “Delhi might want to retain four players. One will be Shreyas Iyer, secondly Rishabh Pant, but there can be a competition between Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw for the third retention.”
On the other hand, Chopra feels it will be a no-brainer that Delhi Capitals will retain Kagiso Rabada. The South African had scalped 30 wickets in 17 matches of IPL 2020 and had played a key role in taking DC to the final of the 13th edition of IPL as he had finished as the Purple Cap holder.
“One overseas player you have to retain, you can do Kagiso Rabada. That is also pretty straightforward.”
Delhi Capitals were at the top of the points table with six wins from eight matches before the tournament was indefinitely postponed. The IPL 2021 will now resume from September 19 in the UAE.
