Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has heaped praise on Devon Conway, stating that he is a superb player in all formats of the game. Conway has delivered the goods for New Zealand across all formats and he has also done a good job for Chennai Super Kings.
The left-hander scored a match-winning knock of 83 runs off just 45 balls with the help of six fours and as many sixes against RCB on Monday. Thus, he helped CSK post a massive total of 226-6 in their 20 overs after Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bowl first.
This was the fifth IPL fifty for Conway and he has performed consistently for CSK. Conway has been giving good starts to CSK along with his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad.
“He is a very good player. We’ve seen him at the Test level, where he’ll play orthodox cricket. In this format of the game, look at the kind of shots he played – the scoops, the cuts, the drives, the lofted shots, the pull shots, the flick, everything,” said Gavaskar while talking to Star Sports.
“This just tells you that if batters can get their minds around what they need to do, they can do it. Devon Conway is a superb player in all formats of the game,” Gavaskar added.
Conway has been in good form in the ongoing season of the IPL, amassing 181 runs in five matches for CSK.
On the other hand, Gavaskar also showered praise on MS Dhoni, who took two crucial catches of Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell.
“There’s the dew factor as well, sometimes the ball can get wet and can slip out of your hands. The best of fielders drop catches and we have seen that. Eventually the man with the big gloves can make the difference because the gloves cushion the spin of the ball which the bare palms can’t do,” said Gavaskar.
CSK will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Friday.
