Shubman Gill is delighted and proud after being anointed as Gujarat Titans captain ahead of Indian Premier League 2024. Gill, who was Titans’ vice-captain, was promoted to the captaincy role after Hardik Pandya re-joined Mumbai Indians in an all-cash trade deal.
Gill, 24, will become one of the youngest captains in IPL history and he will look to lead from the front. Pandya, on the other hand, had led Gujarat Titans to glory in IPL 2022 and then also took the franchise to the final in the previous season.
Meanwhile, Gill scored 890 runs in 17 matches of IPL 2023 for Gujarat Titans at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80. Thus, he played a key role in the team’s success and finished as the highest run-getter of the season.
“I am delighted and proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket,” Shubman Gill said in a statement.
On the other hand, Gujarat Titans’s Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki has backed Gill to deliver the goods as a leader for the franchise.
“Shubman Gill has shown growth in stature and standing over the last two years at the highest level of the game. We’ve seen him mature not only as a batter but also as a leader in cricket.
“His contribution on the field has helped Gujarat Titans emerge as a formidable force, guiding the team through a successful campaign in 2022 and a strong run in 2023. His maturity and skill is evident in his on-field performance and we are extremely excited to embark on a new journey with a young leader like Shubman at the helm,” Solanki said.
It will be interesting to note how young Shubman Gill will handle captaincy pressure in the IPL. The youngster will look to lead with aplomb and get the job done for the franchise in the next season.
