Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill said he would have liked to chase down 143 runs against Punjab Kings a bit early to boost Net Run Rate but in the end he was happy to get those two points at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, Chandigarh on Sunday.
After losing the toss, GT bowlers did a fine job as they skittled out the hosts for a below-par score of 142. PBKS openers – Prabhsimran Singh and Sam Curran – added 52 runs for the opening alliance but the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
Sai Kishore was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat Titans as the left-arm orthodox spinner returned with impressive figures of 4-33 in his quota of four overs. Kishore did a fine job as he accounted for Jitesh Sharma, Harpreet Brar, Shashank Singh, and Ashutosh Sharma.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill scored a decent knock of 35 runs off 29 balls and he said he tries to think as a batter when he is batting.
Shubman Gill said in the post-match presentation, “Would have liked to finish it a bit early, but good to get those two points. (Captaincy) It’s been very exciting for me to be able to take up this role. Except for the over-rate, everything has been good. When I am out there batting, I just want to play as a batter, I don’t want to think too much about the captaincy.”
Gill was given a send off by Liam Livingstone after the two exchanged a few words in the middle.
Gill added, “He (Livingstone) was trying to rush me there but the ball that I got out, I would have made that decision even if I was batting as a batsman or even without that little bit that we had (small altercation).”
Gujarat Titans will next take on Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Wednesday.
