Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill was delighted after they clinched a three-wicket win (DLS method) against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in the ongoing IPL 2025 on Tuesday.
MI posted 155-8 on the board after Gill decided to bowl first but continuous rain in the second innings made it difficult for both teams. Gill revealed the batting wasn’t easy with regular rain breaks and said they wanted to be more aggressive after the Powerplay overs, in which they managed only 29 runs.
Gill and Jos Buttler added 72 runs for the second wicket after in-form Sai Sudharsan was dismissed cheaply. The GT captain scored 43 runs whereas Jos Buttler added 30 runs. Furthermore, impact player Sherfane Rutherford played a crucial cameo of 15-ball 28 but GT’s middle order crumbled.
GT needed 15 runs off the final over after a revised target of 147 and Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee were able to get their team over the line.
Shubman Gill said in the post-match presentation, “There was a little bit of chaos when we came into bat after the rain but always good to have a W (win) on your side. The game plans were different in the powerplay, it was raining and the atmosphere was such that it felt like a Test match. We wanted to take the game on after the powerplay but the rain kept coming.”
He added, “The wicket was a little bit slow, with the rain coming in, the shots were not easy to hit so we thought, when it’s in our zone, we would go for it. It was frustrating, we were ahead at one stage but we lost 4/20. But, the universe gave us a chance before two minutes and we took it. When the match goes till the last ball when you chase 150, every contribution becomes important. Wins like these get you through in these big tournaments like IPL.”
Gujarat Titans will next take on Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Sunday.
