IPL 2026 CSK vs RR: Dhoni-less Chennai, Royals under new captain aim to bury last season’s ghosts with a bang

    March 30, 2026

Both the teams will be looking for a fast start to build some confidence, especially after  what has been described as a disappointing time last year. There are quite a few players  moving in and out between the two teams, which adds an extra layer of intrigue. One of the most interesting inclusions is Sanju Samson coming into Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from  Rajasthan Royals (RR). It will be fascinating to see how he performs, particularly since he is  expected to arrive full of confidence following a terrific T20 World Cup 2026.

Pairing him with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order makes for a very imposing opening  combination. It is also good to see Gaikwad back fit after missing a major part of last  season.

However, a major setback for CSK at the moment is the absence of former captain MS  Dhoni for at least a couple of weeks. This is likely to have a significant impact, not only in  terms of his ability to influence games in the latter stages but also because of his tactical  understanding of the game. His ability to guide and support the captain, Gaikwad, will be  missed, and that could pose a challenge for the current leader in the early part of the  season. The middle order, particularly positions three, four, and five, will be interesting to  watch in terms of how they are structured.

Ayush Mhatre is someone who is highly regarded and could be a strong option at number  three. At the same time, Brevis is another player who deserves attention. There has often  been a feeling that teams tend to push him too far down the order, placing him at five or  six, which may not be ideal.

There is a strong case for him to bat higher, possibly at number three or at least number  four. Shivam Dube is another player who should be promoted up the order, potentially at  number five. Then there is Kartik Sharma, an exciting six-hitter, who could get a good  opportunity in the initial matches, especially in the absence of Dhoni. This combination  could shape the batting lineup in the opening weeks.

On the bowling front, CSK’s strategy is likely to rely heavily on Matt Henry to provide early  breakthroughs in the powerplay. Khaleel Ahmed is another option, along with Spencer  Johnson. There is also the possibility of including Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad. Although  Noor has not been in the best form recently and may be lacking confidence after the World  Cup, he was a highly effective bowler for CSK last year. Being back in a familiar  environment might help him regain his rhythm and deliver strong performances again.

Overall, it will be crucial for CSK to start strongly to build confidence within the squad.

As far as RR are concerned, there has been a shift in the leadership setup, with a new  coach in Kumar Sangakkara and a captain in Riyan Parag. However, Parag might have  become a full-time captain this year for RR but leadership is not entirely new to him as he  led the side in several matches last year.

Sangakkara has taken over as head coach instead of director of cricket, marking a change  at the top. The inclusion of Ravindra Jadeja adds another interesting dimension. Having  previously played for CSK, it is somewhat ironic that his first match will be against his  former team, alongside other players like Samson.

Jadeja is still considered a terrific cricketer and is seen as an excellent addition for RR,  particularly because they needed support in their spin department. His partnership with  Ravi Bishnoi is expected to strengthen an area that was a weakness for Royals last year.  This improved spin attack should enhance their ability to take wickets during the middle  overs, which had been a concern previously.

Shimron Hetmyer is another player who has long been expected to bat higher in the order.  After finally getting that opportunity in the T20 World Cup, it seems likely that he will be  given a similar role here.

Royals also have a strong opening pair in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Both  players have a lot to play for, both from a team perspective and individually. Jaiswal will be  aiming to secure a place in the white-ball setup, while Sooryavanshi will be looking to  continue impressing and push for a place in the national side.

Parag’s role as captain is another point of discussion. While opinions may vary, there is a  belief that he has done a decent job so far. One of his key challenges will be to get the best  out of Jofra Archer. The pace attack is seen as a potential area of weakness for Royals,  despite the presence of Tushar Deshpande and Sandeep Sharma, who have been  consistent wicket-takers over the years. Much will depend on how Archer is utilised,  particularly in the early overs, to provide momentum.

Another notable addition to the Royals squad is Donovan Ferreira. He is expected to  address some of the issues the team faced in previous seasons, particularly their struggles  while chasing targets and maintaining momentum during the middle overs. Ferreira is  known for his powerful hitting and ability to strike the ball a long way, arguably as far as  anyone in the game at the moment. His presence could provide the necessary impetus in  crucial phases of the innings.

The absence of Sam Curran is a loss for Royals, but Dasun Shanaka has been brought in as  a replacement. Overall, the team appears to have made a solid effort to address the  weaknesses that affected them last year. Additionally, Nandre Burger should not be  overlooked, as he could form a potent new-ball partnership with Archer.

The use of overseas signings will be an important factor in determining how RR perform.  Based on the changes and reinforcements, they appear to be a much stronger side  compared to last season. The balance of the squad, along with the improvements in key  areas, suggests that they could be better equipped to handle the challenges ahead.
