Mumbai Indians produced a statement performance to kick off their campaign, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night.
Chasing a daunting target of 221, Mumbai’s opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton dismantled the KKR bowling attack with a breathtaking 148-run stand in just 72 balls. Their contrasting styles—Rohit’s elegance through the off side and Rickelton’s brute force on the leg side—ensured the chase was firmly under control from the outset.
Rohit, after a cautious start that included a streaky boundary off Blessing Muzarabani, soon found his rhythm. The MI stalwart thrilled the home crowd with a series of crisp cover drives and lofted shots, including a standout inside-out six and a commanding hit off Varun Chakaravarthy. His fluency brought chants of “Rohit, Rohit” echoing across the stadium.
At the other end, Rickelton punished anything on his pads, exploiting inconsistent lines from KKR’s bowlers. The visitors’ struggles deepened when captain Ajinkya Rahane was forced off the field early due to cramps, leaving the side without leadership during a crucial phase.
Earlier, Rahane had anchored KKR’s innings after being put in to bat. Alongside Finn Allen, he provided a rapid start. However, MI debutant Shardul Thakur turned the game with a decisive spell, striking in each of his first three overs. He dismissed Allen with a clever knuckle ball and later outfoxed Cameron Green with a change of pace.
Despite Thakur’s breakthroughs, Rahane continued his aggressive approach, taking on Mayank Markande with consecutive sixes before Jasprit Bumrah briefly slowed the scoring. Thakur eventually removed Rahane in the 14th over, but contributions from Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh pushed KKR to a formidable 220.
However, the total proved insufficient against Mumbai’s relentless batting display. The chase was wrapped up comfortably, with Naman Dhir sealing victory with a boundary off Anukul Roy in the final over.
The win marks Mumbai Indians’ first successful start to an IPL season since 2012, setting an early tone for what could be a strong campaign ahead.
