Irfan Pathan encourages CSK to keep backup option for Ajinkya Rahane

As the anticipation mounts for the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, cricket enthusiasts worldwide are gearing up for another exhilarating season of intense competition and stellar performances.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings, hailed as one of the most successful franchises in the history of IPL, have been the subject of avid speculation and analysis. Following their triumphant run in the IPL 2023, where they clinched victory over Gujarat Titans in a thrilling final, expectations and curiosity have been building around their strategies and potential alterations for the upcoming season.

Renowned former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan weighed in on the matter, offering insights into possible adjustments for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming tournament. Pathan highlighted the necessity for the team to consider a new No. 3 batter, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the lineup to ensure consistency and adaptability, especially considering diverse pitch conditions.

“Ajinkya Rahane started playing for CSK on the Wankhede pitch. That was his first game, and he did really well. After that, he kept his momentum going forward. But they are aware that he is slightly restricted when it comes to slow pitches. So they would want to have a backup for him as well,” Pathan expressed during his preview of the auction on Star Sports.

Pathan also shed light on the evolving role of legendary cricketer MS Dhoni within the team dynamics. Acknowledging Dhoni’s undeniable prowess while acknowledging his shifting batting positions, Pathan emphasized the necessity of finding suitable replacements within the lineup, notably for Ambati Rayudu, and the crucial requirement for a proficient No. 3 batter.

“You need to understand that MS Dhoni is not at his peak, and he used to bat at No. 8 regularly. Everyone wanted MS Dhoni to bat up the order, but he didn’t. Even Dhoni knows that he is not young anymore. So they definitely need a replacement for Ambati Rayudu, but they need a good No. 3 batter as well,” Pathan added.

With Chennai Super Kings strategizing to uphold their legacy of excellence in the IPL, the team’s deliberations and potential moves ahead of the auction have sparked avid discussions among fans and experts alike. As the cricketing world awaits the commencement of IPL 2024, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the reigning champions, heightening the excitement and intrigue surrounding their quest for continued success.
