‘It became clear how important those runs were:’ Mohammed Siraj talks about his vital batting contribution in India’s win over Pakistan

Pacer Mohammed Siraj expressed immense satisfaction as his crucial seven runs contributed to India’s thrilling six-run victory over Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Siraj’s unexpected yet pivotal performance with the bat highlighted the significance of every player’s contribution in a closely contested match.

Siraj, who came in to bat at number 11, managed to accumulate seven vital runs, navigating the fierce yorkers from Pakistani pacers. His effort included three doubles—two of which were aided by overthrows—and a single in seven balls. This innings marked only the third time Siraj had batted in a T20 International, yet it turned out to be his highest score in the format, underscoring its importance in a low-scoring game.

Reflecting on his performance in a video released by the BCCI, Siraj shared his delight. “I have practiced a lot for it in the nets, even in the IPL. I practiced a lot because whatever runs the tailenders score are very crucial at the end of the day,” he said. “At the end, it became clear how important my seven runs were. I am very happy with those seven runs and the win.”

In the same video, Yuzvendra Chahal interviewed Rishabh Pant, who played a crucial knock of 42 off 31 balls and took three important catches. When asked about his favourite catch, Pant deflected the praise towards Siraj, acknowledging his teammate’s exceptional fielding.

“All catches are favorite because when you come in after so long, you want to do well in everything,” Pant said. “At the same time, the World Cup has just started and my focus is just on putting in the efforts. But, today, Miyan fielded really well so he deserves a bit of praise too.”

Both Pant and Siraj had faced skepticism regarding their inclusion in the World Cup squad due to their previous T20I performances. However, their contributions in this match against Pakistan seem to have justified the team management’s decisions, silencing critics and reaffirming their value to the team.

Siraj also spoke about his disciplined bowling, which, although did not yield any wickets, was instrumental in maintaining pressure on Pakistan’s batting lineup. The right-arm quick conceded only 19 runs in his four-over spell, crucially containing the opposition during key phases of the match.

“India and Pakistan have a big rivalry, it’s a big occasion,” Siraj commented. “My plan was that because it’s a small total, I should not try too much, keep it simple and execute it well and if the batter takes the risk and hits from there then it’s just a good shot. I just wanted to keep bowling at the same spot.”

India’s victory over Pakistan has placed them at the top of their group, setting a solid foundation for advancing to the Super Eights with two remaining group stage matches against the USA and Canada.
