Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has opened up on being ignored in the Asia Cup squad. Iyer has performed consistently in the white-ball formats and thus his absence has surprised a lot of cricket experts. The Mumbai batter admitted it is frustrating when you feel you deserve to be in the playing XI.
Iyer scored 604 runs in 17 matches at an average of 50.33 and a blistering strike rate of 175.07. Ergo, he played an instrumental role in taking PBKS to the final of the tournament but he was overlooked by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel.
Furthermore, Iyer had scored 243 runs in five matches of the Champions Trophy 2025 and had played a key role in taking the team to glory.
“It is only frustrating when you know that you deserve to be in the team, in the playing XI. At that time, it’s frustrating,” Shreyas was quoted as saying on the iQOO India podcast. “But at the same time, when you know that someone is performing and playing consistently for the team and bringing their best, you support them. And eventually, the goal is for the team to win. When the team is winning, everyone is happy,” he said.
“Even if you don’t get a chance, you have to make sure that you do your work ethically. It’s not like you do it only when someone is watching. Even when no one is watching, you have to keep doing your work,” he added.
Shreyas will lead the India ‘A’ team for two multi-day games against Australia ‘A’ in Lucknow.
India ‘A’ squad: Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhimanyu Easwaran, N Jagadeesan (WK), Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel (VC & WK), Devdutt Padikkal, Harsh Dubey, Ayush Badoni, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Tanush Kotian, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Khaleel Ahmed, Manav Suthar, Yash Thakur, KL Rahul* and Mohammed Siraj*.
