Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie showered praise on Washington Sundar after the third T20I against Australia, which India won by five wickets. Sundar scored a blistering knock of 49 runs off just 23 balls to help India get over the line in the run-chase of 187.

Batting at number six, Sundar smashed three fours and four sixes. The left-hander pulled the ball with aplomb against the Australian fast bowlers and delivered the goods for the team. With this win, India were able to level the five-match series 1-1.

However, Gillespie wondered why Sundar is batting after Axar Patel, who was promoted to number five but could only manage 17 runs off 12 balls.

Jason Gillespie said on Fast Bowling Cartel YouTube Channel, “I don’t know why he is batting below Axar Patel. That 49* was absolutely superb. He wasn’t intimidated by the Australian seamers and just looked to take it on. They’ve got a nice batting lineup. I just felt Axar Patel is one or two spots too high in that order. He’s a good player, no doubt. But he is probably more suited to subcontinent conditions.”

On the other hand, Gillespie’s former bowling partner, Glenn McGrath, hailed Sundar’s attitude while training.

“I’ve spent a little bit of time with Washington Sundar in Chennai when I’ve been coaching. He has just got a great attitude. He just goes and backs himself when he gets the opportunity.”

Meanwhile, Gillespie also praised Indian opener Abhishek Sharma for his aggressive approach at the top of the order. Sharma scored 25 runs off 16 balls in the third game of the series.

“He (Abhishek Sharma) just goes out there and is aggressive. He runs at the first ball and just looks to put pressure on the opposition. He’s an excitement machine and the anticipation of him walking out can be seen in the last couple of games,” said Gillespie (via the aforementioned source).

The fourth T20I between India and Australia will be played on Thursday at the Bill Pippen Oval, Gold Coast.
