Former South African batter JP Duminy has put his weight behind Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to deliver big performances in the upcoming Champions Trophy. Rohit recently bounced back into form as he scored a fantastic century in the second ODI against England at Cuttack on Sunday.
The Indian captain scored an impressive knock of 119 runs off just 90 balls with the help of a dozen fours and seven sixes and played a key role in helping India chase down 305.
Rohit was under the pump for his ordinary performances in the Test series against Australia as he had scored only 31 runs in three matches at an average of 6.20. However, Rohit has been a consistent performer in the ODI format and he is going to hold the key for India at the top of the order in the Champions Trophy.
Duminy has observed Rohit Sharma from close quarters while playing with him for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
“Form is temporary, class is permanent (on Rohit). I was reminded of that a few days ago, and Rohit certainly fits that mold. I have no doubt he will come back stronger. I’ve had the privilege of playing alongside him, and one of his greatest attributes is his consistency in who he is regardless of his performances. He’s a great leader, and he has enjoyed tremendous success with both the Mumbai Indians and the Indian team,” Duminy told TimesofIndia.
“Cricket is a game of ups and downs, but how we respond to those challenges defines us as players and as people. Knowing Rohit’s character, and having seen the consistency in his interviews and behavior over the last few months, I know that the players and staff trust him to come out of this stronger. I’m pretty sure we’re going to see some big performances from him soon,” he added.
India will kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on February 20.
