Former Indian leg-spinner Karn Sharma has opened up on MS Dhoni’s shock retirement from Test cricket during the Border-Gavaskar series 2014-15. Sharma also recently decided to call time on his career from all forms of the game.
Meanwhile, Dhoni took the cricketing world by surprise after announcing his Test retirement midway in the 2014-15 series against Australia. Sharma was also part of the Australia tour and revealed nobody had any clue regarding Dhoni’s retirement.
Dhoni scored 4876 runs in 90 Test matches at an average of 38.09.
“None of us knew that he would retire. He called a team meeting, and we thought it was a normal meeting, but he announced his retirement. Everyone knows that nobody will know what is going on in his mind. He makes decisions that he feels are best for him,” Karn Sharma said during an interview with Revsportz.
Meanwhile, Sharma observed Dhoni from close quarters, spending four seasons with Chennai Super Kings. The leg-spinner revealed he was on the receiving end of Dhoni’s scolding, but it was for the benefit of the team.
“I have been scolded by him, and if it is beneficial for the team, then it is okay. He has scolded me too, but still you cannot predict what goes on in his mind. I have played with him for four years. Everything was good, but predicting him is not easy,” he said.
Sharma revealed that MS Dhoni and the rest of the CSK players were emotional after winning the title in 2018, following a two-year ban.
“The emotional aspect came out after we won, and Dhoni also said that when we did not play for two years, our followers increased instead of decreasing. So you get to know how much people like CSK. We were called the daddies army and all that, but we just wanted to put in our best effort. I think even in T20 cricket you need that experience and a mix of seniors and juniors. Only those who have the experience can survive tense situations.”
Dhoni led CSK to five titles during his captaincy stint.
