Former England captain and Delhi Capitals (DC) mentor Kevin Pietersen has thrown his support behind KL Rahul’s return to India’s T20I setup, advocating for the stylish batter to occupy the crucial No.4 position at the T20 World Cup 2026.
Pietersen, who has been closely working with Rahul during IPL 2025, believes that the 32-year-old’s experience and current form make him the ideal candidate to strengthen India’s middle order while also donning the wicketkeeping gloves.
“I’d bat KL at four for India in T20 cricket. I think you guys have got plenty of opening batters. You’ve got Surya who bats at the top, you’ve got all of these guys, but the way that KL Rahul is playing cricket now, he would be my first choice to bat at four and keep wicket for India,” Pietersen said.
Rahul, who traditionally operated as an opener, has adjusted to a middle-order role for DC this season and produced several important innings, reigniting discussions about his place in India’s T20I plans. His ability to adapt and anchor the innings while also accelerating when needed has been highlighted as a key asset.
However, Rahul’s path back into India’s T20 side is far from guaranteed. Despite a strong start to IPL 2025, showing increased intent and a willingness to take risks, recent performances have raised old concerns. His 41 off 39 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore, on a surface where teammate Tristan Stubbs later thrived, reignited criticism about his strike rate and over-cautious approach.
Selectors have been favoring wicketkeeper-batters who align with India’s new aggressive template in T20s—players who maintain a high strike rate and show consistent intent at the crease. Rahul’s ability to consistently match that philosophy will likely determine his chances of making the World Cup squad.
While decks have been challenging at times, consistent strike rotation and timely acceleration remain essential. Sporadic flashes of form may not suffice in the highly competitive environment, especially with emerging talents pushing for spots.
For now, KL Rahul remains in the conversation, thanks largely to Pietersen’s endorsement and his undeniable skill set. But to solidify his spot, he must prove that his evolution is permanent—and not just a temporary adjustment.
