KL Rahul Opens Up on Constant Scrutiny After India’s Champions Trophy Semifinal Triumph Over Australia

India booked its place in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 with a hard-fought four-wicket win over Australia at the Dubai International Stadium. The victory was anchored by a crucial 84-run knock from Virat Kohli, who once again rose to the occasion in a high-stakes game.

Chasing a target of 265, India crossed the line thanks to a calm and composed unbeaten 42 off 34 balls from KL Rahul, who guided the team home in the final overs.

Throughout the tournament, Rahul has been a key figure in India’s middle order, consistently delivering under pressure while batting at No. 6 — a role that often goes underappreciated. After the semifinal victory, Rahul spoke candidly to Star Sports, expressing his frustration over the constant questioning of his role in the team despite years of proven performances in the middle order.

“Honestly, I mean it’s since I think 2020 I’ve batted at No. 5 and a lot of times people forget that that’s where I’ve been batting,” Rahul said. “Every time I perform in a series and then there’s a break from ODI cricket, there’s a question mark again about ‘will he play in the XI, where does he fit?’ Sometimes I’m sitting there thinking what more can I do.”

Rahul’s comments highlighted the ongoing scrutiny around his position despite his adaptability and reliability in the middle order. Since 2020, Rahul has often been slotted at No. 5 or No. 6, adjusting seamlessly to the team’s needs — whether accelerating the scoring or steadying the innings after quick wickets.

His frustration stems from the recurring doubts surrounding his place in the side, especially after every gap in the ODI calendar. Despite consistent performances, questions resurface about whether he fits into the playing XI, leaving him wondering what more he needs to prove to solidify his role.

Rahul credited captain Rohit Sharma for his unwavering support over the last few years, acknowledging how Rohit’s backing has allowed him to play with confidence and clarity. “Everywhere that I’ve been asked to play, I’ve played and I feel like I have performed my role. Whatever’s been told to me by Rohit Sharma — Rohit’s been the captain for the last four-five years — I feel like I’ve done that to the best of my ability. And I know that Rohit feels the same and he’s always supported me and backed me with that.”

With India now just one step away from lifting the Champions Trophy, Rahul’s steady contributions and mental resilience will be crucial. His ability to absorb pressure, coupled with the captain’s trust, could well be the key to India’s success in the final.
