Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth slammed Tilak Varma for his shot selection against South Africa in the Super 8 stage clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday. While chasing a target of 188, India lost the wicket of in-form Ishan Kishan in the very first over.
However, Varma stepped down the track against Marco Jansen in the next over and got an outside edge to wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock. Varma has managed 107 runs in five matches of the World Cup at an average of 21.40 and a strike rate of 118.88. The left-hander wasn’t able to convert his starts into substantial scores in the group stage.
Srikkanth said Sanju Samson can replace Tilak Varma, who played a horrible shot against the Proteas.
Kris Srikkanth said on his YouTube Channel, “If Sanju Samson has to come into the 11, there is no place for Tilak Varma. Many are questioning Tilak’s place in the side. There’s a good chance he’ll be dropped from the 11 for the shot he played today. It was a horrible shot, and he didn’t deserve to stay at the crease after playing a shot like that.”
The 1983 World Cup-winning player said India is clearly missing the services of chase master, Virat Kohli.
“Kohli was the Player of the Match is our top three chases in the T20 World Cup. There is clearly a big hole without a chase master like Virat Kohli. India will continue struggling to chase big totals without him. All the teams will only bat first and make India chase moving forward,” said Srikkanth (via the aforementioned source).
India will next take on Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Thursday.
