Former Indian opener WV Raman reckons making Vaibhav Suryavanshi play at the U-19 level is likely to be detrimental to his growth. Suryavanshi is part of India’s Under-19 World Cup squad but could only score two runs while opening the innings against the USA on Thursday.
The young prodigy has already proved his mettle while playing for India A and in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. Thus, Raman believes the youngster should be fast tracked to the senior Indian team.
The youngster was in stunning form in the three-match youth ODI series against South Africa Under-19. The pugnacious left-hander scored a magnum opus knock of 127 runs off just 74 balls with the help of nine fours and 10 sixes in the third ODI.
Suryavanshi’s blistering knock helped India Under-19 post a mammoth total of 393 runs on the board. The visitors registered a gargantuan win of 233 runs after the hosts were bowled out for 160 in 35 overs. Thus, the 14-year-old was awarded Player of the Match after India Under-19 registered a 3-0 series win.
The southpaw scored a total of 206 runs in three matches of the series at an average of 68.67 and a blistering strike rate of 187.27 and thus bagged the Player of the Series award.
“This could be an unpopular opinion.#Suryavanshi has performed extremely well in the A series and the IPL. Making him play at the U-19 level is likely to be detrimental to his growth. He may win matches no doubt, but it should be always be about the big picture,” Raman wrote on X.
Suryavanshi scored 252 runs in seven IPL 2025 matches for Rajasthan Royals at an average of 36 and a blistering strike rate of 206.55 and he is definitely one to look out for.
