Marnus Labuschagne has been recalled to the Australia squad for the upcoming Ashes whereas Steve Smith will lead in the opening Test in the absence of injured Pat Cummins. Jake Weatherald has received a call-up to the squad and he is expected to open the innings with Usman Khawaja.
Sam Konstas, who had made his debut against India, has not found a place in the team. Konstas had impressed against the Indians but could only manage 50 runs in three Test matches against the West Indies, including two ducks. On the other hand, Weatherald has performed consistently in the Sheffield Shield this season, amassing 906 runs in 18 innings for Tasmania at an average of 50.33.
Australia have named two other uncapped players in the squad – Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett. Scott Boland has been named in the squad and he is expected to play in place of Pat Cummins. Cameron Green and Beau Webster are the all-rounders whereas Alex Carey and Josh Inglis are the two wicketkeeping options.

Australian chief selector George Bailey said they have good balance in the squad as all the players, barring Josh Inglis, were playing in the domestic circuit.
