It has been reported that Mumbai Indians are keen on retaining Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2027, according to the Times of India. After IPL 2026, it was reported that Hardik Pandya could move to Chennai Super Kings.

Meanwhile, the all-rounder hasn’t played any professional cricket since the end of IPL 2026. Pandya scored 206 runs in 10 matches at an average of 22.89 and a strike rate of 138.25. 

Furthermore, he could only pick up four wickets in 10 games at a high economy rate of 11.42. Thus, he could not deliver consistently for the franchise and failed to lead from the front.

“Don’t be surprised if he [Hardik Pandya] is not traded at all. Discussions have also happened with the player along these lines. For a trade to happen, multiple things need to fall into place. So it’s not that straightforward,” a source told the Times of India.

Meanwhile, under Pandya’s captaincy, MI have qualified for the playoffs on a solitary occasion in last three seasons. Former skipper Rohit Sharma, who led MI to five IPL titles, can once again take over the captaincy baton.

“The management has already explored this idea, and it is learnt that former India and MI captain Rohit Sharma is actively involved in discussions about the captaincy and the team’s direction. Returning Rohit to the captaincy was also an option, but a new face is likely as the 39-year-old is not keen to wear the armband again. Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah are two potential options, with the scales tilting in the former’s favour,” the report mentions.

Furthermore, the five-time champions will continue to back their head coach Mahela Jayawardene and batter Suryakumar Yadav despite a disappointing previous season.

“Yes, he didn’t have a good season last year, but what about the ones before that? MI will not discard a player based on one season, and that’s not how they operate. They take pride in the ‘One Family’ tag and swear by it,” the source said of Suryakumar Yadav’s future with MI.
