MI-W vs UP Warriorz: Mumbai Hold the Edge, but UP Ride the Momentum

    February 26, 2025

Mumbai vs UP Warriorz – a crucial showdown awaits in Women’s Premier League. The WPL is finely poised, with both teams locked at 4 points, making this a high-stakes 2nd vs 3rd clash.

Mumbai haven’t quite hit their peak yet. They’ve shown flashes of brilliance but are still building towards their best cricket. Meanwhile, the UP Warriorz have managed to edge past their opponents in the last two games. That resilience will surely boost team morale and fuel their confidence heading into this contest. Even so, they’re still searching for a complete performance.

Looking at Mumbai Indians first, Nat Sciver-Brunt has been outstanding. In many ways, she has been the glue holding the team together, especially with the bat. That, however, is a bit of a concern. While Humaira Kazi has chipped in with a few contributions, Mumbai will be worried that key players like Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr haven’t really found their rhythm with the bat yet. Their form will be crucial moving forward.

For the UP Warriorz, the key will be getting rid of Nat Sciver-Brunt early, as that could expose Mumbai’s batting lineup. However, Mumbai still have plenty of untapped resources, and it’s only a matter of time before they hit top form.

They’ve been solid so far—Amelia Kerr, Amanjot Kaur, and Humaira Kazi all put in strong performances in the last game. But overall, Mumbai still seem to be operating at about 6 or 7 out of 10. You get the sense that their best cricket is yet to come.

A few games in, with a game in hand, this match becomes crucial for MI-Women. If they can get runs from Matthews, Kerr, and their top order, they have the potential to be the dominant force everyone expects them to be.

As for the UP Warriorz, they’ve been impressive in their last couple of games. They may have stumbled at times, but they’ve found a way to grind out wins—showing resilience that could make them a real threat.

The impact of those performances on the dressing room could be massive. Chinelle Henry has been brilliant in this season, winning a game against Delhi Capitals Women almost single-handedly. Sophie Ecclestone was outstanding in the Super Over—not entirely on her own, but she played a crucial role with the ball.

That said, UP Warriorz face some of the same challenges as Mumbai. A few of their key players, particularly the Australians Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris, are yet to fire with the bat. If they can find form, Warriorz could become an even more formidable side.

Grace Harris has chipped in with wickets, but with the bat, she—along with other key players—is  yet to make the kind of impact expected. These are players who can dominate, play aggressively, and take the game away in an instant. Finding their best form will be crucial.

With four games already played, the UP Warriorz have had ample time to find their rhythm and establish themselves in the tournament. However, one glaring weakness has been their fielding, which has let them down on multiple occasions. Their catching, in particular, has been below par, with dropped chances proving costly in tight situations.

In a highly competitive league like the WPL, sharp fielding can often be the difference between winning and losing. Missed opportunities not only give the opposition extra chances but also put additional pressure on the bowlers. Improving their fielding will be crucial if they want to challenge the top teams and stay in contention.

On paper, Mumbai appear to be the stronger side and will likely go in as favorites. However, momentum seems to be with the UP Warriorz after their last couple of hard-fought wins, which could make this a fascinating contest.

One player to watch for the Warriorz is young seamer Kranti Goud. She has been really impressive, especially with her ability to move the ball away—a skill that could prove crucial in this matchup.

She hits good lengths and is definitely one to watch. In one of our earlier pieces, we highlighted young talents who could make a real impact in this tournament, and she is certainly among them.

Hopefully, she delivers another strong performance against Mumbai and continues to make her mark.
