Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has thrown his support behind Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to emerge as the highest run-scorer in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19 in Karachi.
Clarke, speaking on his YouTube channel and podcast, also predicted India as the tournament winner while naming key players to watch out for.
Rohit Sharma’s recent form has reignited hopes for India ahead of the Champions Trophy. After a difficult Test series against Australia, where he faced heavy criticism, the 37-year-old bounced back with a century in the second ODI against England. His performance reassured fans and analysts alike, and Clarke firmly believes Rohit will be instrumental in India’s campaign.
“Well, I am saying India is going to win (Champions Trophy). I am going to go with their captain, who’s back in form. I am going to say Rohit Sharma – leading run scorer in the tournament,” Clarke stated on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast.
While Clarke is skeptical about England’s overall performance, he has high expectations from their pace spearhead, Jofra Archer. The fast bowler, who has been recovering from injuries, is expected to make a strong impact. Clarke described Archer as a “superstar” and predicted he would trouble opposition batters throughout the tournament.
“I want to go with Jofra Archer – leading wicket-taker. I know England; I am not expecting them to do that well, but I think he’s a superstar. I think Jofra is going to be really hard to play,” Clarke said.
Clarke also named Australian batter Travis Head as his pick for Player of the Tournament. He praised Head’s consistent performances in the IPL and Australia’s Test matches, highlighting his recent break in Sri Lanka as a chance to recharge before the tournament.
“I am going to go with Travis Head (for Player of the Tournament). His IPL form was phenomenal. Australian Test summer form was phenomenal. He has had a bit of a break in Sri Lanka. He is ready to go again. So, I am going to say Travis Head Player of the Tournament even though I think Australia might lose the final,” Clarke added.
With India aiming to reclaim the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma’s form will be crucial. Clarke’s predictions set the stage for an exciting tournament, with Rohit, Archer, and Head expected to play starring roles.
