Former Australian batter Michael Hussey has put his weight behind under-fire Cameron Green and called the team management to persist with the all-rounder. Green hasn’t been at his best in the ongoing Ashes as he has managed 149 runs in seven innings at an average of 21.29.
Furthermore, the lanky all-rounder has scalped only four wickets in five Test matches at an average of 70.75. Thus, Green has failed to deliver the goods for the home team.
Hussey reckons the talismanic all-rounder can learn a lot from this series and improve his game for the future.
“I think he’ll actually really learn a lot from this series, learn a lot about himself as a person, learn a lot about himself about his game. It’ll build his resilience. I think he’s someone that has to be persisted with. He’s someone that can bat in the top six. He can bowl high-quality overs. This series hasn’t gone his way. Some of it to his own mistakes, but some of it, things just don’t go your way. And sometimes that happens in cricket, happens in a Test series. He’s had a tough series here and he will have learned a lot. We’ll see the benefits of that in the next, I think we’ve got 20 Test matches coming up in the next couple of years, we’ll see the benefits of that in those games,” Hussey told Fox Sports.
Green was dismissed for 37 runs on the third day’s play of the fifth Ashes Test at Sydney and could not convert his start. The right-hander could not control the extra bounce and was caught by Ben Duckett at deep square leg.
Meanwhile, Australia have put themselves in front as England ended the penultimate day of the series at 302-8, leading by 119 runs with Jacob Bethell unbeaten on 142.
