Former England captain Michael Vaughan showered praise on Virat Kohli after he announced his retirement from Test cricket. Vaughan said no individual has done as much as Kohli for the health of Test format.
Kohli amassed 9230 runs in 123 Test matches at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. In the last 69 Test innings since 2020, Kohli managed only 2028 runs at an average of 30.72, including just three centuries.
Meanwhile, Kohli played with his heart on his sleeve and was always passionate about giving his absolute best in the red-ball version. He led India aggressively in the multi-day format and promoted Test cricket like no other player in the world.
Michael Vaughan wrote on X, “In my time playing and broadcasting no individual has done as much for Test cricket as Virat Kohli .. his passion, energy and commitment to the greatest format has helped so much .. I hope the next generation of Indian players take on his mantel.”
Kohli announced his Test retirement on Monday, which took the cricket world by shock.
Kohli wrote on Instagram, “As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for. I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile.”
The veteran also led India in 68 Test matches, winning 40, drawing 11 and losing 17, and thus he is regarded as one of India’s most successful Test captains. Kohli will continue playing in ODIs for India.
