Former England captain Michael Vaughan was not impressed after Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed after scoring 14 runs in the third T20I against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, Rajkot on Tuesday.
Yadav struck a six and a four in his knock before he was dismissed by Mark Wood in the last over of the Powerplay when he top-edged a short-length delivery to wicket-keeper Phil Salt.
The right-hander has managed only 26 in three T20I against England and he hasn’t batted at his best in the recent past. SKY’s last six T20I innings read as 14, 12, 0, 1, 4, and 21, and thus he would look to turn the tables.
Vaughan reckons SKY needs to show more guile in his shot selection while taking the aggressive approach in T20Is.
“When you say be aggressive all the time, it is choosing the right ball to be aggressive to. Clearly you cannot hit every single ball to the boundary. For India to be the team they are, they are the world champions for a reason, they need their best players in form,” Vaughan said (via Cricbuzz).
“Only way the players get into good form is by spending time in the middle. At the minute, Suryakumar Yadav is going out there, hitting a few good shots, and before you blink, he is back on his way to the dugout, without making too much of a contribution,” he added.
Meanwhile, India had to chase 172 runs for the win in the third T20I and thus Vaughan questioned SKY’s batting approach.
“If there was ever a time for him to just step back and go from fifth gear to third gear, just to give himself a chance to get in, it was probably now. You’re not chasing 210-220, the target was a reasonable one, just to play sensibly and chase it down,” Vaughan said in the same discussion.
The fourth T20I between India and England will take place at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Friday.
