Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali questioned the team management for knocking out Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s confidence in the T20I series against England. Samson was dropped from the final XI after he managed a solitary run in the opening game.
Earlier, Samson had returned with scores of 5 and 0 in two T20Is against Ireland. On the other hand, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was handed his much-awaited debut in the second game against England but the youngster was dismissed after scoring only 14 runs off 10 balls.
In the next two games, Sooryavanshi was dismissed after scoring 13 and 15. However, surprisingly he was dropped in the final game of the series on Saturday. Sanju Samson was brought back into the playing XI in Sooryavanshi’s place but the Kerala batter could score a cameo of 14-ball 27.
“If you’re going to bring him in, you can’t drop him after two games. Rather don’t bring him in. They’ve knocked two guys’ confidence now. Sanju and Suryavanshi. Suryavanshi has come in for two (three) games. Obviously got dropped. He’s 15 so he won’t be feeling it as much, I guess. They don’t overthink at that age. But Sanju got dropped after being Player of the Tournament in the World Cup. Couple of low scores and you drop for a player, which is fine, but then you bring him back in. So both of them are low on confidence. It’s a bit of a blow for both of them, which I don’t agree with,” Moeen Ali said on the ‘Beard Before Wicket’ podcast.
Ali said India muddled up in picking the right combination in the T20I series against England, which led to their downfall.
He said, “Its a shocking way and I think they just muddled up. I think India are going through a phase where there are scars in the combination with too many left-handers. I think they have generally been poor. They are normally actually very good at these things but they have been extremely poor.”
India and England will next take on each other in a three-match ODI series, starting Tuesday at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
