Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif believes Virat Kohli can play for another five to six years if he stays motivated and continues his rich form. Kohli scored a match-winning knock of 93 runs off just 91 balls with the help of eight fours and one six against New Zealand in the series opener at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara on Sunday.
Once again, the talisman was able to hit the ground running and took the attack against the opposition from the get-go. Thus, he played an instrumental role in India’s four-wicket win and was awarded Player of the Match.
Kohli also breached the 28000 runs mark in International cricket across all formats, becoming the second player to do so after legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli has amassed 28068 runs in 557 matches across all formats, whereas Tendulkar scored 34357 runs in 664 games at the top level.
“Virat Kohli plays ODIs like he is playing Delhi local league. Looks relaxed, jokes with mates, always has a smile on his face. Takes a hard look at bowlers, plays aggressively but shows patience. If he continues like this, remains motivated, he can keep playing for India for the next 5-6 years,” Mohammad Kaif posted on X.
On becoming the second-highest run-getter in the game, Kohli said in the post-match presentation, “If I look back at my whole journey, then it is nothing short of a dream come true for me. I have always known my abilities, but I also knew I had to work extremely hard to get where I am today. God has blessed me with far more than I could ever ask for, I look back at my journey with a lot of grace and gratitude, and I feel really proud of it.”
The second ODI between India and New Zealand will be played at Rajkot on Wednesday.
