India’s speedster Mohammed Shami emerged as the shining star of the 2023 World Cup, securing the highest wicket tally of 24 in the tournament, earning accolades and recognition for his impeccable bowling displays.
Throughout the competition, Shami’s consistent brilliance spearheaded India’s formidable bowling attack. However, former Pakistani cricketer Hasan Raza’s contentious claim suggesting a special ball was behind India’s success drew Shami’s sharp response.
In an interview with Puma, Shami fired back at Raza, dismissing the allegations as baseless and fueled by envy. “Some Pakistani players couldn’t digest our success at the World Cup… They kept making statements, claiming we were given a different ball. Sudhar jao yaar (improve yourself),” retorted Shami, highlighting the absurdity of such claims coming from an ex-player.
Shami also voiced his dismay over Raza’s irrational remarks through an Instagram story, urging him to refrain from making unfounded statements.
Despite his stellar performance, Shami revealed his unawareness of breaking records until discovering them on Instagram. His primary focus remained on fulfilling his assigned role and contributing to the team’s success.
Surpassing Zaheer Khan’s record, Shami became India’s highest wicket-taker in World Cup history. However, he expressed his lack of attention towards records, emphasizing his commitment to playing for the team’s cause rather than individual achievements.
Reflecting on his record-breaking feat, Shami admitted being oblivious to the milestone during the game, underscoring his focus on the match rather than personal accomplishments.
While Shami’s outstanding form powered India’s journey, their World Cup campaign concluded with Australia’s victory in the final, halting India’s pursuit for a third World Cup title. Australia’s sixth World Cup triumph capped off a memorable tournament, marking an end to India’s dominant run in the competition.
