Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will struggle to get going in Test cricket. Sooryavanshi has found success in his young T20I career but Panesar reckons it would be difficult for the youngster to repeat the same in the red-ball version.

The 15-year-old recently scored 192 runs in five innings while playing for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. However, he didn’t get any chance in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan.

The southpaw scored 151 runs in three games against Zimbabwe after he had a slow start against England. Earlier in the year, Sooryavanshi hogged the limelight after he scored 776 runs in 16 matches of IPL 2026 for Rajasthan Royals.

Monty Panesar said on the Beyond23 Cricket podcast, “I can’t see Suryavanshi transitioning to Test cricket. Harry Brook is the only one right now who’s in the top 10 in Tests and T20Is. But I just don’t think Suryavanshi has got the technique.”

On the other hand, former Australian skipper Michael Clarke reckons it is possible to succeed in T20I and Test cricket simultaneously, but it would be interesting to note if Sooryavanshi would have the zeal to play the red-ball version of the game.

“I think you can still play all three formats. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers showed that. These guys were brilliant Test cricketers and unbelievable T20 cricketers as well. If a player from this generation like Suryavanshi can make the transition into Test cricket, it is going to be unreal to watch. But whether he wants to play Test cricket is going to be a question as well,” said Clarke (via the aforementioned source).

“Right now, power is still his main thing, and he has an amazing eye. He picks the ball as well as any young cricketer in the world. The technique will get better the more he tours with India and trains in different conditions. He’s talented enough that, if he wants to do it, I can’t see any reason why he can’t be a superstar in all three formats.”

Sooryavanshi is part of India’s squad for the Asian Games.
