Mumbai City FC Secures Narrow Win Over 10-Man Mohammedan Sporting in ISL 2024-25 Encounter

Mumbai City FC edged past Mohammedan Sporting SC with a 1-0 victory at the Kishore Bharati Stadium on Sunday, ending their winless streak in the Indian Super League (ISL) – 11. Vikram Pratap Singh’s second-half strike proved decisive as the visitors climbed to seventh place in the standings.

The match week 12 fixture saw contrasting fortunes for the two sides. While Mumbai City collected three crucial points to take their tally to 17 from 11 matches, Mohammedan Sporting suffered their seventh defeat in eight games. The Kolkata-based side remains rooted to the bottom of the table with just five points in their debut ISL season.

The first half was uneventful as both teams struggled to create meaningful chances. Mohammedan Sporting’s defense, compact and well-organized, thwarted Mumbai City’s attempts to build momentum. However, the tide turned in the 34th minute when Mohammedan’s defensive midfielder Mohamed Irshad was sent off for two quick yellow cards, leaving the home side to play with 10 men.

Despite their numerical advantage, Mumbai City failed to capitalize immediately, with their own rhythm disrupted by the early injury of French midfielder Jeremy Manzorro.

Mumbai City found their breakthrough shortly after halftime. In the 48th minute, Mohammedan Sporting’s goalkeeper Bhaskar Roy made a critical error with a poor clearance, handing Vikram Pratap Singh a golden opportunity. The Mumbai City forward made no mistake, unleashing a powerful shot into the net to give his team the lead.

Mumbai City pressed hard to extend their advantage but lacked precision in the final third. Mohammedan Sporting, despite being a man down, showed resilience but failed to create significant chances to equalize.

The win marks a much-needed morale boost for Mumbai City, who have struggled for consistency this season. Head coach Des Buckingham will be encouraged by his team’s ability to grind out a result despite an underwhelming performance.

For Mohammedan Sporting, the loss adds to their growing woes in a disappointing debut season. Head coach Andrey Chernyshov will need to address the team’s defensive lapses and inability to convert opportunities as they battle to avoid a last-place finish.

Match Summary

Result: Mohammedan Sporting SC 0 lost to Mumbai City FC 1 (Vikram Pratap Singh 48’).

Mumbai City moves to seventh in the ISL standings, while Mohammedan Sporting remains at the bottom.
