Former Indian Test opener Murali Vijay believes the Mumbai Indians’ future will depend on how overseas players perform in the next few seasons. Vijay said former all-rounder Kieron Pollard was a superstar for the franchise and MI would need foreign players to perform like him.
The former Tamil Nadu batter said MI has a potent squad and they tick most of the right boxes as a unit. MI has players like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma.
Meanwhile, MI has overseas players like Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Trent Boult, Corbin Bosch, and Mitchell Santner.
Vijay said on Star Sports, “Their overseas players need to be more professional and take up the responsibility for all the backing MI has done. Kieron Pollard was a superstar for them. Who will fill those big boots? Their future depends on how the overseas players perform.”
On the other hand, former Indian batter Subramaniam Badrinath said MI has a solid Indian core.
He said, “They’ve a formidable side. They have the best fast bowler and all-rounder in Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. One of the best captains, Suryakumar Yadav, is playing without even captaining the side. Apart from these, they have the best middle-order batter, Tilak Varma, and the former best captain in Rohit Sharma.”
“Without adding anything else, the team is complete here itself. If you just add two other solid players, you’ve the best team in the IPL. They made smart picks in the auction, especially Will Jacks and Quinton de Kock. De Kock at base price is a superior pick.”
On the other hand, former Indian Test opener Sadagopan Ramesh said Jasprit Bumrah is like the Godfather for any team and he is the X-factor at all times.

“Bumrah is like the Godfather for any team. He is the X-factor at all times. You can use him in two ways. Either with a set plan to bowl him in the 3rd, 7th, 18th, and 20th overs. Otherwise, you use him when there is a problem at any time in the match or when the match is slipping away,” said Ramesh (via the aforementioned source).
“If a captain has a headache during a match, he immediately turns to his medicine, which is Jasprit Bumrah. So if he is fit and in form, we can assume MI are already past the halfway mark for success.”
Mumbai Indians will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on 29th March.
