Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir has criticized the fixation with statistics within sub-continent cricket teams, asserting that teams like India and Pakistan need to shift their focus away from numbers to achieve better results on the international stage.
Gambhir lauded Rohit Sharma’s approach during the 2023 World Cup, highlighting his team-centric batting over personal milestones.
In a discussion with Sportskeeda, Gambhir stressed the significance of prioritizing the team’s needs over individual statistics, stating, “Hundreds don’t matter, Rohit Sharma’s approach matters. Unless sub-continent teams move away from their obsession for stats, our results will not be of the desired level.”
Reflecting on the World Cup, where several players notched up multiple centuries, including Rohit’s solitary hundred amidst three fifties, Gambhir emphasized the need for a shift in perspective, asserting that the importance should be on impactful performances, not just statistical milestones.
Furthermore, Gambhir criticized the prevailing trend of prematurely earmarking young players as future captains based on individual performances. He expressed exasperation, stating, “If any young player scores a hundred, he is touted as the next captain. In the last four years, I don’t know how many next captains we have made.”
The former opener, who amassed over 10,000 international runs in 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is for India, highlighted the undue pressure of captaincy expectations, stressing the significance of focusing on winning matches rather than prematurely labeling potential leaders.
Gambhir concluded by emphasizing that captaincy is merely a responsibility and criticized the ongoing race to anoint the next skipper without adequate consideration for actual match-winning contributions. He cited the example of Rohit Sharma’s leadership, highlighting the continual speculation over the next captain in case the incumbent fails to secure coveted titles like the World Cup.
