Indian batter Shubman Gill was delighted after playing an impressive knock of 90 runs in the first innings of the third Test match against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday. On Friday, Gill looked a tad tentative at the start of his innings but he looked more confident on the next day.
Gill scored seven fours and one six in his fine knock and added a crucial alliance of 96 runs with Rishabh Pant to put India in front. Courtesy of Gill and Pant’s knocks, India posted 263 runs on the board to take a 28-run lead after New Zealand was skittled out for 235.
The right-hander also had the rub of the green on his side as he was dropped by substitute fielder Mark Chapman when he was on 45 and he went on to double his score.
“One of my better knocks in Test. To have a consistent mindset while playing spinners. We were trying to put them under pressure. We were having fun. It is difficult for bowlers to bowl consistently if we keep hitting them,” Shubman Gill said about his batting and partnership with Rishabh Pant.
Gill was ruled out of the opening Test match due to a stiff neck and said he didn’t get a lot of time to practice for the series.
“I worked on my game before the England series started. I really didn’t get that much time because of injury. Before the Pune Test, I got net sessions. Conversations with the coach was to have more repetition of the practice I do,” Shubman said.
“I’ve been having a great year. I was confident going into this game. When you are playing for the country, you enjoy it,” he further added.
There is no doubt that Gill is once again going to hold the key in the second innings as India’s batting hasn’t been at its absolute best in the ongoing series.
At the draw of stumps on the second day, New Zealand were 171-9, leading by 143 runs.
