As the IPL approaches, Gujarat Titans present an intriguing mix of strengths and uncertainties. On paper, this is a squad with enviable depth in bowling and a solid top order. Yet, one question continues to linger: what does their middle order look like?
At the top, Gujarat appear well covered. Captain Shubman Gill will be expected to lead from the front – particularly so after being dropped from India’s T20I squad before the World Cup – alongside the ever-consistent Sai Sudarshan and the vastly experienced Jos Buttler, even though he hasn’t scored a T20 fifty since September.
This trio has the ability to dominate attacks and set up or chase down big totals. However, the concern begins the moment one looks beyond them.
The middle order composition remains unclear. Is Washington Sundar expected to take on the number four role? Will the team finally utilise Glenn Phillips’ explosive batting ability, or will he once again find himself warming the bench? Players like Shah Rukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia provide finishing options, while Jason Holder adds depth and experience lower down the order. But the crucial positions at four and five remain unsettled, and that lack of clarity could hurt Gujarat in tight games.
There is also the question of team balance. If Holder plays, he offers versatility with both bat and ball. But if Gujarat opt to strengthen their batting by including Phillips, it could mean compromising slightly on bowling depth – an area where they are otherwise extremely well stocked.
Indeed, their bowling is where GT look formidable. With names like Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan, and Prasidh Krishna, complemented by options such as R Sai Kishore and Sundar, they possess both variety and experience. New entrant Ashok Sharma could also emerge as a wildcard, though fitting him into the playing XI presents its own challenges.
Ultimately, Gujarat seem overly reliant on a handful of players. Their fortunes could hinge significantly on Gill delivering a standout season and Buttler rediscovering his form after a lean patch.
If those two fire, Gujarat could remain competitive and push for a playoff spot. But if they falter, the lack of a stable middle order might prove to be the Titans’ undoing in IPL 2026.
