Devdutt Padikkal produced a patient and determined century to anchor India A’s revival on the fourth day of the unofficial Test against Australia A in Lucknow, scoring his seventh First-Class hundred under pressure.
The left-handed batter reached the milestone in the final session, nudging a single off Corey Rocchiccioli to bring up his century off 198 deliveries. It was a knock marked by restraint, composure, and smart shot selection, as Padikkal guided India A out of a precarious position and back into contention.
He became the second Indian centurion in the match, following wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel, who had reached his hundred on Thursday. Together, the duo stitched a vital partnership of over 200 runs after coming together at a difficult juncture when the scoreboard read 222 for four.
Australia A had started to tighten their grip on the match when Jurel and Padikkal stepped in to steady the innings. While Jurel played with attacking intent, finding gaps and taking the pressure off, Padikkal played the perfect foil. The Karnataka batter’s knock was built on technique and temperament. By the time he reached three figures, he had struck just nine boundaries, a testament to his focus on placement over power.
The partnership between the two batters was not only crucial in terms of runs but also in halting the momentum that Australia A had begun to build. Their stand helped India A shift the narrative of the match and offered a glimpse of the depth and resilience within India’s bench strength.
For Padikkal, this century is a timely reminder of his red-ball credentials. Often known for his prowess in white-ball cricket, this knock reaffirmed his ability to play the long game, occupy the crease, and deliver under pressure in the longer format.
The hosts will now look to push for a strong finish on the final day, buoyed by the grit and determination shown by two young batters looking to break into the senior national team. With both Jurel and Padikkal continuing to impress at the India A level, the future of India’s batting unit looks promising.
