Opener Lakshay Rajesh Raichandani produced a marathon unbeaten innings to put India U-19 in a commanding position on the third day of the first Youth Test against Sri Lanka U-19, finishing just four runs short of a double century at the Galle International Stadium on Wednesday.

Resuming the day at 186 without loss, India built steadily on their overnight score as both openers converted their strong starts into centuries. Raichandani remained unbeaten on 196 from 306 deliveries, while Sagar Virk made a patient 134 off 312 balls to lay a solid platform for the visitors.

Raichandani’s impressive knock featured 21 boundaries and three sixes, highlighting both his endurance and stroke-making ability during a lengthy stay at the crease. At stumps, he was joined by Kush Patel, who was unbeaten on three, with India reaching 378 for three.

Despite the strong batting display, India still trailed Sri Lanka U-19 by 46 runs at the close of play after the hosts posted 424 for nine in their first innings.

Sri Lanka had taken control of the match earlier thanks to a remarkable double century from Senuja Wekunagoda, whose innings helped his side establish a formidable total. India, however, responded with determination, as Raichandani and Virk frustrated the Sri Lankan bowlers with a disciplined opening partnership that consumed more than 600 deliveries.

Raichandani now stands on the verge of converting his outstanding innings into a double century when play resumes, while India will aim to erase the remaining deficit and push for a first-innings lead.

The Youth Test is being played at the Galle International Stadium, the venue that will also host the first senior Test between India and Sri Lanka next month. With two days of play completed, the contest remains finely balanced, with India’s top-order resilience setting up an intriguing finish to the opening match of the series.
