What began as a promising evening at Eden Gardens ended in frustration as relentless rain forced the abandonment of the Indian Premier League 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings on Monday.
The occasion had all the makings of a lively contest. Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan made his first appearance of the season, drawing cheers from the crowd. Fans turned up in good numbers, hoping to see Kolkata Knight Riders bounce back from recent setbacks.
However, the weather had other plans.
Despite forecasts predicting rain, KKR chose to bat first after the toss. Their innings got off to a shaky start, reaching just 25 for two in 3.4 overs before heavy showers brought play to a halt barely 17 minutes into the match.
KKR, already dealing with back-to-back losses, were without key players Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine due to injuries. In an attempt to strengthen their lineup, Rovman Powell and Navdeep Saini were included in the playing XI.
But the changes did little to improve their early fortunes. Openers Finn Allen and Cameron Green both fell cheaply, caught behind off disciplined bowling from Xavier Bartlett. With Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi at the crease trying to stabilise the innings, the rain arrived and stopped play abruptly.
There was brief optimism as the groundstaff rushed to cover the pitch and outfield efficiently. For a while, it seemed a restart might be possible. But conditions worsened as the evening progressed.
Strong winds swept across the stadium, followed by persistent and heavy rainfall. Water began to collect on the covers, and puddles formed around the ground. The stands slowly emptied as spectators sought shelter, their anticipation replaced by resignation.
After a prolonged delay and no sign of improvement, match referee Javagal Srinath officially called off the game at 11:00 PM IST. Both teams were awarded one point each.
In a strange twist of coincidence, when these two teams met at Eden Gardens last season, that match too was abandoned due to rain.
A year later, history repeated itself. Despite the electric build-up and star presence, it was the unpredictable April weather in Kolkata that once again had the final say.
