Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has shed light on Shubman Gill-Rohit Sharma mix-up during the first ODI between India and Afghanistan. Ashwin noted it is a basic teaching that a non-striker must respond to striker’s call for a single.
In the sixth over of the run chase, Afghanistan’s spinner Allah Ghazanfar blocked Gill’s path and thus he could not respond to Rohit’s call for a single.
Rohit had to make a U-turn after he jetted off for a run but could not get back in time to the crease. The veteran Indian batter was dismissed after scoring a run-a-ball 16 whereas Gill went on to score an unbeaten knock of 84 runs in the run-chase of 195.
“I had seen that run-out live on broadcast, and I don’t know when the audiences will realise that when you play in front of the wicket, whenever there is such a case, it is the call of the striker that the non-striker needs to uphold. It is really easy to debate. Gill denied the run, and this is also not the first run out between him and Rohit Sharma,” R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“If the striker says yes to a run, there is no scene of saying no. All of these basics of running between the wickets, they teach all of this in childhood. All of these are basic things. Everyone makes mistakes, I am not saying it is the mistake of one or the other here, but the truth here is, Rohit was not at fault at all,” he added.
On the other hand, Gill also shed light on Rohit’s dismissal and revealed that veteran was fine after watching the replay.
“He saw the replay, he said it’s fine. Even in the last match that we played against Afghanistan, T20s, he got run out there as well,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.
The second ODI between India and Afghanistan will be played at Lucknow on Wednesday.
