Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has shed light on the possibility of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma taking coaching roles after the 2027 ODI World Cup. The veteran duo is currently playing only the ODI format after earlier announcing their T20I and Test retirement and the next year’s World Cup is expected to be their swansong at the International stage.

Ashwin said Virat Kohli might take a break after his ODI retirement and added he won’t be interested in taking the coaching role. However, the former off-spinner believes Mumbai Indians could appoint Rohit Sharma as one of their coaches in the IPL.

“I don’t think Virat will be ready to coach. Both have done a lot. Maybe Rohit Sharma can be seen in some capacity in Mumbai Indians. I don’t know about Virat, honestly. I think he would want to take a break. If tomorrow Rohit decides he does not want to play, MI should absorb him immediately. He has won five titles and has won a World Cup for India too. Knowing MI, I don’t think they will leave him either,” Ashwin said on ‘Ash ki Baat’.

Rohit and Virat have maintained their fitness and have also performed consistently over the years. It was earlier reported that Rohit would play his final ODI game at Lord’s but he answered the critics in style.

Rohit scored a magnificent knock of 138 runs off 110 balls in the third ODI at the iconic venue on Sunday as he became the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s. However, his efforts went in vain as India could not chase down a gargantuan total of 388 runs and fell short by 27 runs in the end.

The veteran batter scored 17 fours and five sixes in his blistering knock as he batted at the top of his game.

Rohit and Virat will be next seen in the ODI series against the West Indies in September.
