Former Indian Test all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin said Harmanpreet Kaur’s team lacks depth despite their comprehensive 64-run victory against arch-rivals Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Sunday. Ashwin is not sure if India would be able to go deep in the tournament as they lack power-hitting in their batting.
Meanwhile, after losing two early wickets of Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana added 91 runs off 63 balls. Mandhana scored a fantastic knock of 68 runs off 44 balls, whereas Richa Ghosh added the finishing touches, smashing 34 runs off just 17 balls to help India post 170 runs on the board.
On the other hand, Deepti Sharma returned with impressive figures of 5-10 in her four overs, whereas Sree Charani bagged three wickets to skittle out Pakistan at 106 in 17 overs.
“I am not sure India will go very far in this T20 World Cup because there is a lack of power in the lineup. While India were excellent against Pakistan and their spin attack once again proved decisive, the team still lacks the depth that sides like England and Australia possess,” Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel ‘Ash ki Baat’.
“India’s combination appears slightly short on power-hitting options, which could become a concern in tougher matches against stronger opponents. Compared to the strong lineups of England and Australia, India’s overall team depth remains a significant worry,” he continued.
Barring Richa Ghosh, India doesn’t have a lot of power-hitters in their batting line-up, and it could be a cause of concern against quality teams.
India will next take on the Netherlands at Leeds, Headingley on Wednesday.
