After weeks of speculation, Indian veteran Ravichandran Ashwin has officially signed with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2025/26 season. The move marks Ashwin’s first-ever stint in Australia’s top T20 league and is seen as a major boost for last season’s runners-up.
Ashwin, who was reportedly courted by four different franchises—Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers, Adelaide Strikers, and Sydney Thunder—ultimately chose Thunder, thanks in part to conversations with Ricky Ponting and Thunder captain David Warner, which fast-tracked the deal.
However, the off-spinning all-rounder will not be available for the entire BBL season. Having already committed to the International League T20 (ILT20) 2025/26, which takes place from December 2 to January 4, Ashwin will only feature in a limited number of BBL matches—three to four in the group stage and the knockout rounds, if Thunder qualify. Despite the limited availability, his presence is expected to have a major impact.
Ashwin has also set a base price of USD 120,000 for the ILT20 auction, the highest ever in the league’s history. Franchises are expected to pursue him aggressively, considering his dual skill set and vast experience.
From a tactical perspective, Ashwin’s addition fits neatly into Sydney Thunder’s plans. The team already boasts a spin-rich setup with Shadab Khan, Tanveer Sangha, and Chris Green, but Ashwin’s arrival brings added variety and control—especially on home turf at the Sydney Showground Stadium, known for being spinner-friendly.
The venue has offered the best returns for spin bowlers in recent seasons, with the lowest average (20) and economy rate (6.28) among all BBL venues with at least five games. Thunder have tactically employed multiple spinners at the ground, winning three of their four matches there last season.
With Shadab Khan’s recent form under scrutiny and his absence from Pakistan’s national plans, Ashwin’s presence could push the Pakistani all-rounder to the bench. Sangha is expected to lead the wrist-spin department, while Chris Green and Ashwin form a potent finger-spin duo.
Beyond bowling, Ashwin’s batting depth in the lower order adds further flexibility for the Thunder. Known for his calm temperament and game awareness, his experience in high-pressure situations could prove crucial in the later stages of the tournament.
