Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa feels Shreyas Iyer will become India’s captain if he leads Punjab Kings to the title in IPL 2025. Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to glory in the previous season of the tournament but he wasn’t retained before the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Shreyas was brought for a whooping amount of INR 26.75 crore, making him the second most expensive player in IPL history. Iyer will most likely lead the Mohali-based franchise in the upcoming season of the IPL.
Iyer has shown the right leadership in his young career and he will look to deliver for Punjab Kings.
Uthappa said on Jio Cinema, “He is going from a championship-winning team to a team that has not won any titles. That will be a nice challenge for him. If he can go there and win a title, I have no doubt that he is going to be the next Indian captain.”
Meanwhile, Punjab Kings newly appointed head coach Ricky Ponting worked with Shreyas Iyer for Delhi Capitals when the Mumbai batter led the franchise to the IPL 2020 finals. The former Australian skipper said Iyer would be a great leader for their team.
“I wanted to work with Shreyas. I’ve worked with him before and he is a great guy and a great player. He’ll be a great leader for our team if we decide to go that way, which I’m pretty sure we probably will. And obviously, he was the championship-winning captain last year. So there are lots of great things about bringing him to Punjab.”
Along with Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings brought Arshdeep Singh for INR 18 crore through Right to Match whereas they have bagged the services of Yuzvendra Chahal for the same price. Punjab has also roped in Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for INR 11 crore on the openin .
