Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa showered praise on Shubman Gill for making a bright start to his leadership career. Uthappa said Gill’s stock is right up there in the market after there were question marks on his returns after he was made the Test captain.
Gill was able to make an impressive start to his captaincy career as he led India to a 2-2 series result on the England tour. The right-hander was able to lead from the front, amassing 754 runs in five Test matches against England at an average of 75.40.
Subsequently, Gill scored 129 runs in the first innings at Delhi against the West Indies. Furthermore, the youngster scored a fine fifty in the opening Test at Ahmedabad. The right-hander scored 192 runs in two Test matches at an impressive average of 96. This was Gill’s maiden series win as a Test captain.
Robin Uthappa said on his YouTube Channel, “I think his stock is up. At the start, it was a decent entry. It is a stock that people believed in in terms of potential. So it found early bankers and has actually done really well. His stock is up right now. You have to go back to four months ago when he was announced captain of the Test side going to England. There were questions then as it was a transition in power.”
“Nobody knew because we saw him lead only in T20 cricket and nowhere else. So we had to give him time to evolve as captain and so far, the evolution has been on point for him. Everything is going the way he would have aspired for it to go.”
On the other hand, Uthappa urged in-form KL Rahul to convert his hundreds into massive scores. Rahul was dismissed for exactly a hundred in the first innings of the opening Test against the West Indies. The flamboyant batter scored 532 runs against England in five Test matches but could not go past 150-run despite two centuries.
“We haven’t seen a massive double hundred from KL in a while. It’ll be great to see that and everyone who loves and supports his batting, would love to see that. You want him to score those massive hundreds and not just consistent 50s and 100s,” said Uthappa (via the aforementioned source).
Rahul will be seen in action in the ODI series against Australia.
