Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has reacted to Washington Sundar’s trade deal ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Uthappa said the all-rounder is underutilized and undervalued in the Indian Premier League.
According to Samayam Tamil, the Chennai Super Kings have approached the Gujarat Titans for an all-cash trade deal for Washington Sundar. Uthappa highlighted that Sundar can play multiple roles in the batting order for any franchise. Sundar can bat in the top-order, he can be promoted as a floater, and he can also add the finishing touches towards the fag end of an innings.
Furthermore, Sundar can bowl accurately and economically in the Powerplay overs.
Robin Uthappa said on his YouTube Channel, “I like Washi there. I think Washi is a very underrated player. He is underused, undervalued, and one can only hope that he gets the right roles there.
“I think there is a tremendous amount of value for him to add. I think he could go in as a finisher. It could be someone who bats in the middle order. The funny thing about Washi is that he actually bats up the order as well,” he added.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar was signed by the Gujarat Titans for INR 3.20 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. He scored 135 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 166.25 in IPL 2025.
Uthappa said GT might want to strengthen its remaining purse value with an all-cash trade deal ahead of IPL 2026 mini-auction.
“They probably are very clear about who they want to go after at the auction. They probably want an extra cushion of cash for that. I am certain that if they felt there was someone who could really add value in CSK to their side, then they would have (traded him) because they are very clear about who they pick. They are a very horses-for-courses kind of franchise, and they have very set kind of templates for them as a team.”
Sundar has scalped 39 wickets in 66 IPL matches and has scored 511 runs.
