Rohit Sharma Becomes First Batter to Hit 600 Sixes in International Cricket

Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma has become the first batter in the history of international cricket to hit 600 sixes. He reached this remarkable milestone during India’s opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland on June 5, 2024.

Rohit has been a mainstay of the Indian cricket team since his debut in an ODI against Ireland in June 2007. Known for his elegant stroke play and ability to score big, Sharma has consistently proven his mettle across all formats of the game. His latest achievement of hitting 600 sixes adds another feather to his illustrious cap.

Before the match against Ireland, Sharma needed just three sixes to reach the 600-mark. Stepping onto the pitch, he did not disappoint. Winning the toss, Sharma opted to bowl first on a pitch that favoured the bowlers. Ireland struggled and was bowled out for a mere 96 runs, with contributions from Gareth Delaney, who scored 26 runs. Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh (2/35), Mohammed Siraj (1/13), Jasprit Bumrah (2/6), and Hardik Pandya (3/27) dominated the innings.

In India’s reply, despite losing Virat Kohli early for just 1 run, Sharma, along with Rishabh Pant, steadied the ship. Sharma scored a brilliant 52 off 37 balls, including four fours and three sixes. Unfortunately, he had to retire out due to a shoulder injury sustained from a bouncer. However, during his innings, Sharma achieved the historic feat of hitting his 600th six in international cricket.

In T20Is alone, he has hit 193 sixes in 151 matches, making him the highest six-hitter in the format. Beyond T20Is, Sharma has struck 84 sixes in 59 Test matches and an impressive 323 maximums in 262 ODIs.

Rohit Sharma’s achievement places him at the pinnacle of a prestigious list of cricketers known for their six-hitting capabilities. The top five batters with the most sixes in international cricket are:

  1. Rohit Sharma – 600 sixes
  2. Chris Gayle – 553 sixes
  3. Shahid Afridi – 476 sixes
  4. Brendon McCullum – 398 sixes
  5. Martin Guptill – 383 sixes

These names include some of the most explosive batsmen in the history of the game, further highlighting the significance of Sharma’s milestone.

As India progresses in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, all eyes will be on Rohit Sharma, not just for his captaincy but also for his batting returns. With seven more sixes, Sharma is set to become the first batter to hit 200 sixes in T20Is.

Sharma’s contributions to Indian cricket have been immense, and this latest milestone only solidifies his status as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the sport. As he continues to lead India in pursuit of World Cup glory, fans and cricket enthusiasts worldwide will be eagerly watching to see what records he will break next.

In a career spanning over 17 years, Rohit Sharma has shown that he is not just a prolific run-scorer but also a master of the six-hitting art. His 600th six marks a historic moment in cricket, one that will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
