With concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy, India captain Rohit Sharma has suggested that spinner Varun Chakaravarthy could be in contention for a spot in the Indian squad if he performs well in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England.
Varun was added to India’s squad for the ODIs on Tuesday following an outstanding performance in the T20I series, where he claimed 14 wickets in five matches. His inclusion signals the selectors’ intent to explore additional options, particularly with the Champions Trophy set to be played in Dubai, where spinners could play a key role.
Rohit Sharma acknowledged Varun’s unique skill set and hinted that the team management is keen to test him in the ODI format. “I understand that it was a T20 format, but he has clearly got something different about him. So we just wanted to have an option and see what we can do with him,” Rohit said.
He further emphasized that the ODI series presents an opportunity to assess Varun’s capabilities. “Clearly, during the series, it presents us an opportunity to play him at some stage and see what he is capable of. Right now, we are not thinking about whether we are going to take him, but definitely, he will be in contention. If things plan out well for us and he does what is required, then definitely there is something that we need to think about,” he added.
Varun’s prospects are also being closely evaluated alongside Kuldeep Yadav, who is making a return from injury, and the latest medical assessments on Bumrah. The Indian selectors are expected to monitor these developments closely before finalizing their squad.
With India’s Champions Trophy matches set to be played in spin-friendly conditions in Dubai, Varun’s inclusion could provide the team with a tactical advantage. The Indian team has until February 12 to make any last-minute changes to its squad, making the ODI series against England a crucial testing ground for Varun’s potential role.
