Former Indian cricketer Abhishek Nayar has revealed that Rohit Sharma often praises Tilak Varma as a good cricketing brain. Sharma has observed Varma from close quarters while captaining the youngster in the Indian Premier League.
Varma has impressed with his temperament in his young career and has ticked the right boxes. The left-hander scored 343 runs in 11 matches of IPL 2023 while playing for Mumbai Indians at an average of 42.18 and a blistering strike rate of 164.11.
The youngster was brought for INR 1.70 crores by Mumbai Indians and he has delivered for the franchise. The 21-year-old has scored 740 runs in 25 IPL matches at an average of 38.95 and a strike rate of 144.53. Furthermore, Varma has thus far amassed 237 runs in 11 T20I matches at an average of 33.86 and a strike rate of 139.41.
“Tilak brings two dimensions of his game to the team. Yes, fielding is a part of it and yes, he can bowl, but what is really important when I say two dimensions are his batting and leadership skills,” Nayar was quoted as saying to Jio Cinemas.
“What you always see with Tilak Varma is fearlessless. He is a young player, but what I have always heard, Rohit Sharma often used to say that he is a great cricketing brain. Because when he plays for MI, he gives good suggestions to Rohit. That part of Tilak is going to be great for Indian cricket,” he added.
Varma had also impressed in his maiden IPL season as he scored 397 runs in 14 matches for the five-time champions in IPL 2022. The left-hander will look to continue the good show and grab his chance in the five-match T20I series against Australia, which will kick off on Thursday at Vizag.
