Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was delighted after a 3-0 series win against England. The hosts won the third and final ODI by a comprehensive margin of 142 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
India posted a par score of 356 runs on the board after they were put into bat by England captain Jos Buttler. After Rohit Sharma was dismissed cheaply, Shubman Gill continued his purple patch. Gill scored a fine knock of 112 runs off just 102 balls as he brought his seventh ODI century.
Gill added 116 runs with Virat Kohli and then added 104 runs with Shreyas Iyer. While Kohli scored 52 runs to show glimpses of his form, Iyer scored another impressive knock of 78 runs before he was dismissed on an innocuous delivery down the leg side.
On the other hand, England’s batters could not put up a fight in the second innings as none of them could go past the 40-run mark.
Rohit Sharma said in the post-match presentation, “Very very pleasing (with the way the series went). We knew there will be challenges that we could face. I don’t see there was anything wrong we did this series. Obviously there are certain things we are looking at (to improve) and I am not going to stand here and explain those. It is our job as well to keep some consistency within the squad and the communication is clear.”
He added, “Obviously any champion team wants to get better every game and move forward from there. Very happy with the score (at the break). There is a bit of freedom in the squad to go out there and play the way you want. The World Cup was a perfect example of that and we want to continue to do that. There will be times it will not fall in place but that’s okay.”
India will kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on February 20.
